Christmas appeared to arrive a week early for the U-14’s of New Fair Kuitan FC, who came back from a 2 – 0 to win this latest HKFA U-14 game 3 – 2.
The first half belonged to the Lion's U-14's, whose domineering performance saw them establish a 2-0 lead over their opponents courtesy of Moses Chan's 16th minute goal, followed by Ben Blakemore's effort from a corner 5 minutes later. As the half-time whistle loomed, however, there were warning signs that New Fair Kuitan might find a way back into the game, with a combination of some less clinical finishing from the Lions and sloppy defending on a number of occasions.
Indeed, Kuitan emerged from the dressing room a different side. Taking the game to the Lions, they were presented with an early opportunity to test goalkeeper Reese Wong after a handball from a Lions defender and continued to pile the pressure on a Lions defence that seemed to lose its assertiveness over the course of the game.
Attempting to wrest back control of the game, the Lions mounted wave after wave of attacks but had nothing but a series of corners to show for their exertions. On the other hand, New Fair Kuitan looked dangerous on the break and eventually scored off a rebound from goalkeeper Pawan, which had resulted from a free kick.
The Lions' defence tried to recover from this setback but Kuitan managed to draw level from a corner 5 minutes later, with one of their players breaking free from his marker to slot home. This was compounded by a counter-attack from a Lions' corner which saw their striker complete the turnaround.
Realising the urgency of the situation, the Lions proceeded to set up camp in the Kuitan half but it was one of those days where the ball wouldn't fall in their favour. On a positive note, the players can look at a strong showing in the first half and work towards adding consistency to their game in fixtures to come.
