Ladies U19 Hong Kong Dragons celebrate their 17-0 triumph over the Overseas Lions.

As the showpiece that has and continues to represent a landmark in the careers of players past and present, the 2017 and 50th edition of the New Years Day Youth Tournament was no disappointment as fans were treated to a spectacle of rugby at the Hong Kong Football Club, courtesy of the best and brightest of Hong Kong's next generation.

Featuring a variety of age groups ranging from the U12s to U19s, some of the highlights of the day included a 17-0 victory for the Ladies U19 Hong Kong Dragons over the Overseas Lions, as well as a nail-biting 20-17 win for their male counterparts over the Overseas Lions.

While the Ladies U19s Dragons had established their lead in the first half and contrived to stymie their opposition throughout the remainder of the game, the Boys U19 Warriors Dragons had to withstand a late Lions onslaught in the penultimate game of the day.

The teams contest a line out in what was to be an intense affair, with a Lions player stretchered off the pitch in the 20th minute.

The U19 Warrior Dragons had drawn first blood in the 8th minute, with scrum-half Jason Lam adding to their advantage by capitalising on a defensive error in the Lions' defence.

However, this was met with an impressive individual run from the Lion's Nicolas Poon, who ensured that the Lions went into the half-time break within touching distance of their opponents.

Poon then started the second half in the same vein, notching yet another try in the 2nd minute to make it 15-12 to the Dragons after sprinting well clear of the defence.

Despite this serving as the impetus for a late rally from the Lions, the Warriors Dragons would eventually see out the game and come away with a thrilling 20-17 victory.
