In a landmark decision by UEFA, Stephanie Frappart has been chosen to take charge of the UEFA Super Cup (August 15, 3:00am HKT).

The Super Cup is a single Final contested by the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, with this edition being an all-English affair between Liverpool and Chelsea respectively.

Frappart is no stranger to the big stage, having just officiated in the recent 2019 Women's World Cup Final, as well as being promoted to the upcoming season of the French men's top-flight after earning her stripes in Ligue 2.

Having become the first female referee assigned to a Ligue 1 match this past season, the 35-year-old follows in the footsteps of Bibiana Steinhaus (first female Bundesliga referee) and Nicole Petignat, who made history of her own by becoming the first woman to referee a major men's European tie in 2003.

Will this herald a sea of change where female officials become a more common sight in the men's game?
