The Marines' six try win over Police may appear like an easy victory at first look, but it came after a battle that was as hard as the dry, parched pitch on which the two teams contested. On a hot, cloudless day, the two teams met for the second time this season with the Police seeking revenge for their loss in an earlier round.
However, the Marines were in no mood to show leniency and dominated proceedings from the start. The backs found their rhythm early in the game with some flowing moves that cracked open the Police defence and Matthieu Rivron crossed over for the opening try. Cow Kwok was once again dazzling among the backs with spectacular running lines that wove circles around the opposition.
The boys from Causeway Bay continue to pile on the pressure, with a brace of tries from gap-crashing centre Kam Mak who made a spectacular debut for the Marines and Jenson Tse, another debutante for the Marines, also made a mark with his hard tackles and sizzling runs.
Despite this onslaught, the Police made a recovery and managed to get within a score of the Marines total.
Just as the match looked like it was heading for a close finish, Marines scored from their own kick-off after Maxime Fouchet bludgeoned a hole in their defence with a 50-metre solo run that put the match beyond Police RFC's reach. Just to make sure, mercurial back Liam Sloyan ran a final try to confirm a bonus point win.
Never say die scrum-half Bastian Chan's heroic tackle to prevent a last play try by Police was exemplary and captured the Marines' spirit.
The hospitality of the Police team on their home ground was wonderful as usual and the men in pink rounded up the day with a lusty rendition of the club song. Me me me!
